Tic tac toe also used to be played in another format, where people would shut their eyes, throw a pencil at a number marked on the grid, and total up their scores. The game has even been found on roofing tiles! If you are lucky enough to ever visit Rome, there are lots of tic tac toe sketches around to be found, as it was played so regularly. Instead of being able to write a shape, such as an ‘X’, or an ‘O’, it was played by only having three pebbles and having to move them around the board continually to make ‘three in a row’. This translates to ‘three pebbles at a time’. With such a large board, you can use larger objects for place markers.Did you know that the origins of ‘tic tac toe’ can be traced all of the way back to the times of ancient Egypt? That’s right! The original name for tic tac toe is actually ‘terni lapilli’. Mark off your lines with duct tape or painter’s tape. If you have plain white paper plates, children could draw their animals directly on the paper plate and cut them out to use as markers.įor a life-size version of the game that is perfect for playing outside, use an old bed sheet or large tablecloth as your board. You could even use paper plates, one of our favorite craft supplies. Since we are learning all about jungle and zoo animals this week, why not have children draw lions, elephants, zebras, or whatever their favorite animal is onto a piece of paper (they will need several markers for each player) to cut out and use as place markers? For extra stability, glue the pieces onto thin cardboard or card stock weight paper. You can then use anything to be each person’s place markers. Remember, you need 9 black spaces to play the game. For regular sized versions, simply use painter’s tape or another colored tape to create a tic tac toe board on a large sheet of paper (or on a blank stretch of your floor or outside on a sidewalk, porch or patio). To put a fun spin on it, make your own game and let them help. Introduce young children to the fun of the classic Tic Tac Toe game this week.
